"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (Jame 4:6)
We hear the old adage all the time, 'pride goes before a fall'. However, no one really believes that this applies to them. The truth is this: as long as we live, each of us will struggle with pride. Pride runs rampant in our lives when we allow ourselves to aspire to the status of God and determine that we no longer need to follow him. Pride is at the core of all sin. In order to successfully fight our desire to be prideful, we have to remember three things: we are sinners saved by grace; we must constantly reflect over our journey; and we must always seek God. The opposite of pride is utter humility. If we constantly depend on God for everything, pride has no chance of consuming us. God has a solution to pride: he will do ANYTHING to deliver us.
God, please deliver me from my prideful ways. I am so caught up in myself that I can't even see all of my prideful thinking. Please reveal to me my sinful ways and restore my absolute dependence on you, Lord. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
